The Olympics Come to Everett
March 15, 2012
If you (or your seven-year-old) are an Olympics junkie, you might be interested in the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships at Everett's Comcast Arena this weekend. "Pacific Rim Championships" is not a name that rings like "Olympics," but for the gymnasts it's a bona-fide dress rehersal for this summer's London Games. It's also expected to generate $2M to $3M for the Everett economy (watching all that strenuous exercise makes gymnastics fans really hungry). Turns out USA Gymnastics president and CEO Steve Penny is a Seattleite, having grown up on Mercer Island. Back in the '90s, Steve worked with Seattle sports marketing firm Bob Walsh Enterprises on a bid to bring the Olympics to Seattle. Might the Olympics come to Everett someday? |
