Seattle Getting Massive Commercial Dry Dock From South Korea
Vigor Industrial has acquired what the company says will be the largest commercial dry dock in the Puget Sound area for about $20M, and plans to tow it to Seattle from South Korea this fall. A dry dock pumps out the water around a ship’s hull so it can be worked on. This particular facility will be used to build and repair boats at Vigor Industrial’s 27-acre Harbor Island facility just southwest of the stadiums, the Seattle Times reports.
According to Vigor, which operates marine facilities in Oregon, Washington and Alaska, the new Seattle dry dock will let the company operate on larger ships. It already maintains vessels for the U.S. Navy, the Coast Guard and Washington State Ferries at its two dry docks on Harbor Island. The newest dry dock will measure 640 feet long and 116 feet wide, and can lift 20,000 tons.
