Bone Under Seattle
Sometimes digging into the soil under Seattle pulls up a surprise. During construction of AMLI’s latest multifamily project in South Lake Union, workers found a mammoth tusk—the largest and most complete one ever found in the area. The company halted construction long enough to allow Burke Museum paleontologists to carefully removing dirt from around it with shovels, trowels, and brushes, and then remove the bone. The artifact arrived at the museum this week. Snapped: the museum’s Bruce Crowley, carefully using an awl.
