Big Plans for St. Edward's
The City of Kenmore announced an exciting collaboration this week with State Parks, Bastyr University, and Daniels Real Estate to restore St. Edward Seminary. It's going to be a sustainable redevelopment, so it makes us even more thrilled to have Daniels prez Kevin Daniels keynote our upcoming Bisnow Sustainability: The Green Revolution event on Aug. 27.
“One of the most sustainable development practices is saving and activating older buildings,” Kevin says. The group is looking to rehabilitate the building into classroom and student residential space for Bastyr and is currently developing a proposal. Instead of constructing new buildings and expanding the physical footprint of the Bastyr campus, the renewed 80k SF St. Edward Seminary would be an example of smart land-use practices and sustainability. The project would preserve open space and natural features while breathing life back into an historic structure.
The company is no stranger to giving older buildings new life. In 1990, when Daniels bought the Sears Roebuck store Downtown, there were three cars in the parking lot—now there are over 5,000 people working in the building and it’s one of the largest LEED-EB Gold building in the US, Kevin tells us. “We hope that our legacy is not only saving buildings but providing a spark for economic and community investment.” Bisnow's event will also feature sustainable experts from DLR Group, Google, the GSA, PAE, Paladino & Co, the City of Seattle, Unico, Vulcan, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Mark Huppert as another keynote.
