Private Development Planned at Silicon Valley BART Stations
Construction for the next leg of the Silicon Valley BART extension is still a few years away, but the vision for the transit stations are beginning to come into focus. Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority officials expect private development opportunities on public land to be available on several of the line’s next stops.
Details are still being ironed out but the agency envisions working with developers to build offices or homes on property it will control. Development for a public agency such as the VTA will pose its own set of challenges and risks, but officials feel the revenue potential will ultimately result in a better transit system.
Three stations in Phase 2 of the extension plan are possible targets for development: Alum Rock, Diridon and Santa Clara. Construction on Phase 2 would start in 2019 with passenger service targeted for 2025. [SVBJ]
