Markham Hopes Puck Stops Here
So the GTA might become home to a big-time hockey team, if only the perennially third-rate Leafs will permit an invader on their territory. With Markham council voting at 3am yesterday to foot half the bill, work on a $325M, 20,000-seat rink could start this year. Markham planning commissioner Jim Baird told us the rink will be a catalyst for Markham, especially since plans for the downtown have been revised to embrace Metrolinx's rail station. "We fully expect people from across the GTA to come up for concerts or hockey, if we get a team." The city is to borrow the $325M, with Remington Group, Downtown Markham's main developer, covering half the loan over 20 years. Remington didn't return calls.
