Merger Creates Continental Pet-Retail Powerhouse
Pet Valu
Markham-based Pet Valu has merged with Pet Supermarket, creating North America’s third-largest pet specialty retailer and its largest small-format pet retailer. The combined business (930 stores generating $1B in annual sales across the US and Canada) is called Pet Retail Brands. Pet Valu was taken private by an affiliate of Roark Capital in 2009; Pet Supermarket was acquired by a Roark affiliate in 2015. Pet Retail Brands will be headquartered in Markham, with Pet Valu CEO Thomas McNeely staying on. Pet Supermarket operations will continue to be based in Sunrise, FL.
