Searchlight Capital Takes Majority Stake in Roots Canada
Searchlight Capital Partners is taking a majority stake in Roots Canada, an investment the iconic Toronto-based beaver-logo’d clothing company says will support its next phase of growth. Co-founders Michael Budman and Don Green will remain actively involved in the company—which they started in 1972 and grew to 245 locations in Canada, the US and Asia—and will be “substantial shareholders.” Searchlight co-founder Erol Uzumeri noted that his firm sees “significant growth potential” for the Roots brand both in Canada and "internationally across multiple distribution channels.” Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
