Canada Hits LEED Milestone
Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) this week registered its 5,000th LEED project, with Seneca College’s Newnham Campus Building A on Finch Ave E (above) earning LEED Gold for New Construction and Major Renovations. The level of LEED activity across the country—with 132 registrations and 117 certifications in Q3 alone—shows the market is maturing, says CaGBC president and CEO Thomas Mueller, with LEED becoming the “standard of choice and core business” for building owners and developers. This certainly seems to be the case in downtown Toronto, where, topping the list of LEED highlights of the year, Oxford Properties’ WaterPark Place I and II towers became the first buildings in North America to be re-certified LEED Platinum. The project was awarded LEED Gold in 2012, but improvements and retrofits earned it the Platinum upgrade this summer.
