Deborah Ratner Salzberg On How The Yards Became One Of D.C.’s Hottest Neighborhoods
Forest City President Deborah Ratner Salzberg knew that The Yards was a success the moment she saw people flocking to the mixed-use waterfront development. It almost didn’t happen.
When the Foundry Lofts building lost its financing at the height of the Great Recession, the developer chose instead to build a public park. The decision would serve as a placemaking catalyst for a neighborhood that has since drawn in Washington, D.C., residents with its collection of restaurants, shops, apartments and offices.
The Yards remains a popular place for D.C. residents to live, work and play, and has become a symbol of D.C’s waterfront revival. Baker Tilly's Todd Stokes sat down with Ratner Salzberg to learn more about the history of the development and Forest City’s vision for its future.
