Sobeys' Deal: Clean Up in Aisle 6
In Canada's ongoing grocery retail wars, Sobeys completed its $5.8B purchase of Western Canadian grocery chain Safeway. The company announced back this summer it would be purchasing 213 Safeway stores. A month later, we had Loblaw Cos announce that they were buying Shoppers Drug Mart Corp. Earlier in October, as part of its consent agreement with Canada's Competition Bureau, Sobeys was told they'd have to sell 23 stores—including four Safeway stores and one Thrifty Foods store in BC. All of these moves were hastened by Target's arrival in Canada last year, further intensifying competition on the grocery retail landscape. Meanwhile, we're just looking for someone to tell us whether this melon is ripe or not.
