Weston Named Top Newsmaker
Congrats! Quarterbacking one of the largest takeovers in Canada’s retail history has helped earn Galen G. Weston the title of "Canadian Press Business Newsmaker of the Year" for 2013. Loblaw’s restructuring efforts included its $12.4B acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart, putting it in a stronger position to take on the Walmarts and Targets of the world. (We, too, have tried to conquer Walmart, but usually just come home with some great deals on kitchen appliances.) That deal still needs to formally close, however; it’s in front of the federal competition bureau for approval.
