Port CEO Pushes For Industrial Land Reserve
Port Metro Vancouver CEO Robin Silvester is renewing his call for the creation of an industrial land reserve to head off economic disaster. In a speech last week, Robin stressed the “serious and imminent shortage” of industrial land in the region, with only enough supply left to meet demands for the next 15 years. Robin spoke the day the port unveiled a land use plan aimed at protecting remaining supplies and dealing with looming land shortages. Robin said the port—North America's fourth largest by tonnage—will need 2,300 additional acres of industrial land by 2025 to meet rapidly growing cargo demand. “Without a secure, and adequate, industrial land base,” he told the Vancouver Sun, “we simply cannot compete for new investment and new jobs.”
