UBC Residence Will Be Among World’s Tallest Timber Buildings
Construction is set to begin on Phase 1 of Brock Commons, an 18-storey, 404-unit residence at University of BC’s Point Grey Campus that'll be one of the world’s tallest mass timber buildings. Designed by Vancouver’s Acton Ostry Architects, the building has a hybrid structure with cross-laminated timber floor slabs, glued laminated timber columns and steel connectors, all constructed atop a concrete ground floor with concrete cores rising the tower’s full height. Standing 53 metres, the project will be completed in 2017 at a cost of $51.5M, similar to that of a concrete or steel structure, Brock Commons' designers note.
