Congressional Cemetery To Honor LGBT Soldiers
DC Front Runners, a nonprofit LGBT group, held its second annual Pride 5K race with 1,000 competitors. The event kicked off Capital Pride weekend and raised funds for Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocate Leaders and Team DC Student Athlete Scholarship fund. DC Front Runners also chose Congressional Cemetery, which is thought to be the only cemetery in the country with an LGBT section, as the starting line. The active burial ground will mark dozens of LGBT gravesites with pride flags and a marker with short bios of those interred. The first was gay activist Leonard Matlovich, who was interred at one corner in 1988. The cemetery also plans to create an LGBT tour app and self-guided walking tour.
