Amtrak Unveils Plans To Double The Size Of Union Station Concourse
Cramped conditions that are difficult to maneuver are nothing new for Union Station, but those conditions may be a thing of the past as soon as 2019.
Amtrak has unveiled plans to begin building a new concourse that would double the size of the existing one. Construction is slated to begin this summer, and will carry a price tag of up to $50M, the Washington Post reports.
Designs released on Tuesday reveal some ambitious plans that will see the station’s north wall on the concourse level pushed back to add another 20k SF, while adding new restrooms, boarding gates, seating, a ClubAcela lounge and an Amtrak police station. The extensive project set to wrap in 2019 or 2020.
The concourse improvements are separate from the transformative redevelopment plan for Union Station, which will see over $8B invested in a renovated station, new tracks, a parking garage and bus bays, plus millions of square feet in office, retail and residential space on a platform over the tracks.
