D.C. Issues Permit In NoMa For Elon Musk's Tunnel-Building Company
Elon Musk's plan to build a hyperloop tunnel to allow travel from D.C. to New York in under 30 minutes appears to be gaining traction with District officials.
The Boring Co., Musk's tunnel-building enterprise, was issued a permit in November to do construction staging, but not digging, in NoMa, Greater Greater Washington reports.
The permit, listed as "Top Secret" though publicly available in D.C.'s online database, allows for construction staging at 53 and 55 New York Ave. NE. It was applied for Nov. 7, issued Nov. 23 and expires May 21.
The hyperloop proposal, which Musk unveiled in a tweet in July, would transport people in pods at high speeds through vacuum-sealed tubes, with stops in D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York. Maryland in October gave The Boring Co. conditional approval to begin digging under a 10-mile stretch of the state-owned portion of MD-295 in Anne Arundel County.
"It seems like crazy stuff of the future," Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said at an event in November. "But we're willing to look at not only the immediate solutions ... but also the rapid transportation of the future. I would not have thought he could launch 18 successful space missions this year, but he has done it. So when he says he's going to be able to do this, I'm willing to listen."
