Proposed 325-Foot Rosslyn Observation Tower Met With Skepticism

A Virginia businessman wants to have a bird's-eye view over DC, and he is looking to build an observation tower to achieve just that.

Developer James Burch wants to build a 325-foot tourist destination dubbed the "Spirit of America Tower," on Virginia Department of Transportation-owned land in Rosslyn, ARLnow reports.

The site is just west of the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, near the junction of Route 110 and I-66. The tower, which would be lower than many of the building's on Rosslyn's skyline — but closer to the monuments across the river — would include an observation deck and a 10k SF events center at the top of a spindle reached by glass elevators. It would also have a ground-floor welcome center and theater.

In order for the plan to move forward, Burch would need approval from VDOT, and Arlington County, plus business leaders and federal agencies, and the Washington Business Journal reports the proposal is already being met with heavy skepticism from many of those stakeholders. [ARLnow]
