Turner Construction Lands DC United Stadium Contract
DC United's stadium is expected to bring life to Buzzard Point when it opens in 2018, and we now know which construction company will be tasked with building the $300M building.
The team behind the project has awarded a $150M contract to Turner Construction, the Washington Business Journal reports.
The 19,000-seat stadium (rendered above), the first soccer-only stadium in the region, was designed by Populous, which also designed Nationals Park when it was part of HOK.
DC United—owned by Erick Thohir, Jason Levien and William Chang—will pay $150M for the hard construction costs while the city pays an additional $150M for site work and infrastructure improvements.
In November, DC acquired the two-acre site from Akridge via eminent domain. Demolition on the site began earlier this year. Developers Akridge, Redbridge, Bohler and MRP Realty have all bought land near the stadium and discussed their plans at Bisnow's Booming Capitol Riverfront event last week. [WBJ]
