Huh, what’s cyclocross? Racing bikes over many laps on a short course of pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills, and obstacles.
Challenge: Stay focused on narrow course that’s up and down hills, has 180-degree turns, and spirals in and out. Heart rate hits 165 entire 50 minutes.
How he trains: 75-100 mile rides on weekends to Poolesville; intervals, sprints, and running during the week. Races held mid-September to mid-December. Has already pedaled 4,800 miles and 326 hours this year.
Family: Wife and younger son do road and cyclocross races and interval training at Haines Point. Tom is president of son’s cycling club, Rock Creek Velo.
Family bike trips: Peru, Spain, Italy, France, Austria, Czech Republic, Maine, and California wine country. Going to Croatia soon with wife and sons (ages 16 and 19) for biking down Dalmatian coast between Split and Dubrovnik.
Most beautiful countries scenery? Austria, Czech Republic, and the Pyrenees in north of Spain.
Most challenging ride? With friends for 100 miles. Started following faster bike at mile 75 and eventually caught them. Legs cramped up and couldn’t stand for 30 mins afterwards.
Longest ride in one day? 121 miles this summer.
Bike to work? All year, even in 8 degrees and snow, or 100 degrees and Code Orange. Love Capital Crescent Trail from home in Palisades to Penn Ave., and lane from White House to 13th.
