15 Things You Need to Know This Morning

Title: CEO, Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing.

Organization: Develops, owns, operates, and advocates for affordable housing in Arlington and provides programs and services for residents like financial literacy, wellness, and community engagement. Portfolio is worth $200M with 14 properties, 1,200 apartments. Goal is to add 100 units per year. 
Affordable housing shortage: Since 2000, Arlington has had a net loss of 13,500 affordable rental homes; in 2000, 27% of housing in Arlington was affordable and today it’s 9%.
Annual revenue: $4M.
Memorable project: Arlington Mills – opened a year ago on Columbia Pike. Arlington County built five-story community center and underground parking garage on 2-acre site and APAH built 122 apartments above the back of the county garage. Project cost $32M and came in below budget and on time.
Current project: Turning surface parking lot at older garden apartment complex into 229 apartments. Going through county approvals and construction set to start Q1 2016. 
Grew up: San Francisco Bay area.
Current home: Arlington.
Why DC: Husband was a journalist and wanted to be where news was made.
School: Harvard.
First job: Travel writer for Let’s Go USA – traveled around the country on a Greyhound bus. 
Job in another life: Policy wonk.
Person to meet: Dorothy Day, co-founder of Catholic Worker Movement.
Daily habit: Call mom in California.
Favorite book: Someone Knows My Name.
Favorite movie: Selma.
Favorite vacation: Biking and visiting museums and historic spots in the Netherlands.
Bucket list: Visit Machu Picchu. 
Family: Married 33 years; daughter (doctor in Boston) and son (going to med school at Penn); one cat.
Hobbies: Biking, yoga, and three book clubs (one of them for 30 years).
Startling fact: During 20s, took year off and traveled around the world with husband on extended honeymoon.
