Portals V Loses Two Floors to Gain CFA Approval
Republic Properties made one last design tweak that finally earned its Portals V approval from the US Commission of Fine Arts. The apartment building at 1331 Maryland Ave SW, which was to be 15 stories and 400 units, will now stand 13 stories with 290 apartments and 75 condos. The Robert A.M. Stern Architects-designed building has gone through a series of changes in the six months it's been under review, evolving from a curvy contemporary building to a more traditional structure, the Washington Business Journal reports. The new height revision fits in with the rest of the Portals complex—three office properties and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Republic Properties CEO Steven Grigg says construction is expected to begin in about a year. [WBJ]
