Hundreds of new multifamily units are planned on the site of the YMCA in Arlington's Virginia Square neighborhood.

Orr Partners filed an application on behalf of the YMCA for a redevelopment that would feature 374 units and a new 89K SF recreational facility on the site at 3400 13th St. North, Urban Turf reports.

Republic Properties is serving as a development partner, and it is under contract to purchase the property. The property sits near the intersection of North Kirkwood Road and Washington Boulevard, a half-mile from the Virginia Square Metro station.

Perkins Eastman is designing the project. The plans call for more than 600 parking spaces, both above and below ground, for the residential buildings and the recreation center. The recreation building would include tennis courts, racquetball courts and a pool.

The project is the third building planned on the roughly 7 acres surrounding the historic burial ground of the Ball family — the namesake of the Ballston neighborhood. The other planned projects are a 160-unit affordable housing project on the American Legion Building site and a 255-unit multifamily project from Eleventh Street Development.
