Urban Street Grids In Works For Future Reston Metro Stations

Placeholder

Fairfax County has its eyes on the coming wave of development around future Metro stations in Reston and is looking towards new urban street grids to help support it.

The county’s DOT is conducting the Reston Network Analysis, which seeks to finalize the grid that will be necessary to support future development. Ideas bandied about include realigned or wider roads, adjusted traffic signals, new bike lanes and re-striped roads, Greater Greater Washington reports.

Three new ways to cross the Dulles Toll Road are also part of the plans. The Soapstone Drive Overpass will provide a new way to get to the Wiehle-Reston East station, while the Town Center Parkway Underpass will help relieve some of the congestion along Reston Parkway and Fairfax County Parkway. A potential South Lakes Drive Overpass would be similar to Soapstone, with both overpasses allowing for pedestrian and bike access.

Ultimately, the county hopes to make it easier to walk, bike and drive in Reston, all of which will undoubtedly sit well with developers, tenants and residents in the area. Last month, the Meridian Group picked up a 216k SF Class-A office building on Sunset Hills Road within walking distance to the Wiehle-Reston East station. Just across the street from there, development continues on the 1.5M SF mixed-use Reston Station project from Comstock Partners. [GGW]
