A federal agency headquartered in Downtown Bethesda could be on the move.

The GSA released a pre-solicitation Thursday seeking between 110K SF and 126K SF in suburban Maryland for an agency with an expiring lease at the Bethesda Towers office complex on East West Highway.

The pre-solicitation did not specify the agency with the expiring lease, but the three-building complex houses the headquarters of two federal agencies: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission.

The expiring lease has a five-year renewal option that the GSA is considering exercising, the pre-solicitation said, but it will also consider alternative spaces in Montgomery County and Prince George's County. It said the agency is seeking a five-year lease, and it will select the most economically advantageous option, taking relocation costs into account.

The Bethesda Towers complex at 4330, 4340 and 4350 East West Highway sits less than a half-mile from the Bethesda Metro station. It was built in the 1970s, and Moore & Associates acquired the property in 2005. In August, Moore & Associates retained Cushman & Wakefield to market the property for sale. The property hasn't sold, and the listing remains active on LoopNet

The GSA said expressions of interests are due May 28, and it is working with Savills' Todd Valentine and Bryant Porter on the pre-solicitation. Savills was one of several firms the GSA selected Thursday for new brokerage contracts totaling 39M SF.
