Final Legal Hurdle Cleared for Walmart-Anchored Skyland Project
The final legal hurdle for the long-awaited, Walmart-anchored Skyland Town Center in Southeast DC has been cleared. The District and Safeway have reached an agreement on a matter that could have derailed the project.
At issue was a restrictive covenant held by Safeway that limited competition around its 2845 South Alabama Ave SE location. The Walmart was outside of the zone, but the parking lot was not. To resolve the issue, DC has agreed to pay Safeway $900k a year for four years, beginning in 2019.
Skyland, located at the intersection of Good Hope Road, Naylor Road and Alabama Avenue SE, is scheduled to deliver its first phase in 2018. Once fully completed, the project will house 342k SF of retail and 476 mixed-income residential units. [WBJ]
