GSA Issues RFI on Webster School Redevelopment
The GSA has issued a request for information on the potential for redevelopment of the historic Webster School in DC’s CBD.
The GSA acquired the 27.5k SF building at 940 H St NW in 2003 after security concerns were expressed by the neighboring US Secret Service over a proposed redevelopment by the building’s owner, the National Treasury Employees Union. The building has remained boarded up and vacant ever since. As part of the Obama Administration’s directive to eliminate unneeded assets, the agency is exploring a possible sale, the Washington Business Journal reports.
The school has some limiting factors against it, namely it's likely eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and its location next to the Secret Service HQ. As a local and possibly listed historic landmark, the future owner or developer would be required to preserve it in some way. The GSA has a list of covenants that any potential neighbors of the Secret Service would have to meet, including periodic and reasonable inspections of the property. RFI responses are due by Dec. 18.
