The newest addition to the National Mall, the 400k SF Museum of African American History and Culture, is set to open this fall, and it just received a huge donation from a sports and cultural icon.
Six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan is donating $5M to the museum, the Washington Post reports.
In addition to the cash, the Chicago Bulls legend is also donating a jersey he wore during the 1996 NBA finals. The museum will name a section of its sports gallery the Michael Jordan Hall.
The museum has already raised $278M in private donations, including gifts from African-American icons Oprah Winfrey and Sheila Johnson.
Before Jordan made this gift to celebrate African-American history, he made a donation hoping to improve the future of race relations. Last month he gave $1M to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund to support its policing reform work. [WaPo]
