Report: GSA Took Costly Short-Term Measures
A new report from the Government Accountability Office finds that the General Services Administration was forced to take costly short-term measures for more than half of the leases that expired during a recent three-year period.
The GAO report was requested by Delaware Sen. Tom Carper, who asked the office to look into leases that expire without a long-term plan in place and how to combat the issue moving forward, the Washington Business Journal reports. The GSA has also come under fire of late for its massive backlog on leases. With roughly half of the agency’s leased portfolio set to expire over the next five years, lawmakers have expressed concerns.
The GAO report recommends that the GSA develop a better system to track expiring leases and to develop plans for space ahead of time. GSA administrator Denise Turner Roth has indicated that the agency is addressing the issues and planning at least three years ahead of time for expiring leases. [WBJ]
