Amazon To Open Brick-And-Mortar Location In College Park, MD
Amazon, which has recently begun opening bookstores in major cities and pickup locations around college campuses, is bringing its retail concept to College Park, MD.
The e-commerce giant will open a physical location in Terrapin Row, the 445-unit student housing community that opened in September, serving the University of Maryland.
Amazon has put up its logo in the windows of the storefront, above, and a permit on the door lists the occupant as "Amazon Campus."
The store will serve as a pickup location for online purchases and will not sell any products in-store, Amazon spokesperson Carly Golden told Bisnow.
College Park economic development coordinator Ryan Chelton told Bisnow Amazon will start building out the space soon and plans to move in this spring.
Amazon has opened 18 campus locations, including one last January at UC Berkeley. That store offers pickup and drop-off services and allows customers to try out the Kindle e-reader and Fire tablets.
Cushman & Wakefield's Chris Hunt, Caitlin Slowinski and Hugo Gilbert repped Amazon in this deal, which they have been working on for more than a year. The team is working with Amazon to find additional pick-up locations in the DC area.
Amazon opened its first bookstore in Seattle in November 2015 and in July it was reported that the company would open a location at New York City's Hudson Yards. It also has bookstores in San Diego and Portland and is opening stores this year in Chicago and Boston. In September, the company enlisted retail broker KLNB to seek out potential DC-area sites for its bookstore concept.
