Supermarket chain Giant Food is closing its mid-Atlantic delivery fulfillment centers, including a 3-month-old facility in Northern Virginia.

The Landover, Maryland-based company told employees that its 82K SF industrial facility in Manassas, along with warehouses in Hanover, Maryland, and Milford, Delaware, will all shutter by Oct. 21, WTOP first reported

Giant says it plans to continue fulfilling home delivery requests through a “localized fulfillment model.”

“Our mission is to meet the changing needs of our delivery customers who are increasingly looking for faster delivery, more delivery time slows and a broader assortment,” a Giant spokesman told WTOP in a statement.

The decision is expected to eliminate roughly 400 jobs. The Manassas location brought 200 jobs when it opened in May, according to a press release at the time. Giant says it is working to find other opportunities for impacted employees within the company.

Giant’s Manassas footprint is within Matan Cos.’ Parkway 66, a 190K SF warehouse facility at 7413 Cushing Road, which delivered in November 2020. Global pharmaceutical manufacturer Granules India Ltd. signed a lease for 79K SF at the facility in November.

Neither Giant nor Matan Cos. responded to requests for comment by the time of publication. Giant is owned by Ahold Delhaize, a Netherlands-based retail corporation with several grocery brands.
