JBG Smith Lands Trader Joe's To Anchor Glover Park Development
Trader Joe's, the specialty grocer quickly expanding across D.C., has plans to open a new location in Glover Park.
The company recently applied for a liquor license at 2101 Wisconsin Ave. NW, the former Holiday Inn that JBG Smith is developing into a mixed-use project, Urban Turf reports.
The Holiday Inn closed in 2015 and the developer, then The JBG Cos., acquired the property in June 2016. It brought on Eric Colbert & Associates to design a 225-unit residential building for the site. The development will have 20K SF of retail, including a 15K SF space for a specialty grocer, where Trader Joe's has been rumored to be looking for months. The project is expected to deliver in mid-2019.
Trader Joe's is scheduled to present its plans to the local Advisory Neighborhood Commission on Oct. 12, ANC 3B02 Commissioner Jackie Blumenthal said.
"I think Trader Joe's will be great for the neighborhood," Blumenthal said. "Everybody in the neighborhood has been dying for one to open up."
The store will sit just a block north of a Safeway, but Blumenthal notes the grocers offer very different shopping experiences and food options. The Whole Foods a short walk up the street closed in March and has been locked in a legal battle with its landlord with no reopening in sight.
"The Whole Foods closing has sort of depressed the neighborhood completely," Blumenthal said. "We're happy to have another supermarket open because we don't know what's happening with Whole Foods."
Trader Joe's has two D.C. locations already open in Foggy Bottom and on 14th Street. Its Capitol Hill store is scheduled to open Friday and its fourth location near Union Market is expected to open next year.
