Macy's To Open Discount Store Concept At Fair Oaks Mall
Macy's discount concept, aimed at driving sales and competing with cheaper retailers, is coming to Fairfax.
The retailer is opening a 14K SF Macy's Backstage space within its department store at the Fair Oaks Mall in June, the Washington Business Journal reports.
The Cincinnati-based retailer began rolling out the Backstage concept in 2016. It now has 50 locations, including at Dulles Town Center in Sterling and Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg. It is looking to compete with off-price brands like T.J. Maxx and Nordstrom Rack, which have performed better than traditional department stores in recent years.
The strategy comes as Macy's continues its plan to close 100 stores. A D.C.-area Macy's stores have closed at Ballston Common Mall and Alexandria's Landmark Mall, though those were to make way for redevelopment of the properties.
Also at the Fair Oaks Mall, the Sears department store is consolidating from two stories to one as owner Seritage Growth Properties brings in a Dave & Buster's and a restaurant on the upper level.
