Douglas Development has closed a deal to bring a Target to Ivy City.

The retailer signed on for 67K SF at the corner of New York Avenue and 16th Street NE and plans to open in fall 2020, Target announced Monday.

The company describes it as one of its small-format stores, though it will be significantly larger than the 24,700 SF store it is opening in Cleveland Park in spring 2019 and the 42K SF store coming to Ballston in 2021. Target has also opened the urban-style stores in Bethesda, College Park and Rosslyn

The store will include a CVS Pharmacy and a Starbucks. It will offer fresh produce, snacks and other food items, plus an assortment of beer and wine. It will also have apparel, accessories, home essentials, personal care and beauty products. Target will give customers the ability to buy products online and pick them up in store.

Target is the latest retailer to join Northeast D.C.'s booming Ivy City neighborhood, where Douglas in 2015 redeveloped the Hecht Warehouse into a 338-unit apartment building, sparking a wave of activity. A Nike Store, T.J. Maxx, Petco, Planet Fitness and Mom's Organic Market have opened around the Hecht building.

The neighborhood also boasts popular restaurants such as Ivy City Smokehouse, La Puerta Verde, Big Chief, a host of distilleries and a brewery, Atlas Brew Works. These offerings have attracted a growing number of people to the neighborhood, with the number of Lyft rides taken to Ivy City increasing by 250% between June 2016 and June 2017.

“We’ve formed a great partnership with Target, which is integral to the revitalization of Hecht District," Douglas Development founder Douglas Jemal said in a release. "The New York Ave. space was previously used as a warehouse, and we believe Target’s new small-format store will be a great addition for the community."
