Rising demand from baby boomers has led developers in the D.C. region to pursue a series of new senior housing projects, with the latest one proposed in Fairfax County

Brightview Senior Living Development LLC filed an application this month with Fairfax County to build a 170-unit continuing care facility on Telegraph Road.

The 7.6-acre site at 6507 Telegraph Road in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County is currently home to the Virginia Hills Baptist Church and an affiliated child care center. The project calls for rebuilding those facilities with a new 160-seat church and a child care center that would support 125 children.

The new church building would be constructed on the front of the property along Telegraph Road, and on the rear portion of the site the developer proposes a 194K SF senior living building.

The building's 170 units would feature a mix of independent living units, assisted living units and memory care units. The project's amenities would include a living room, a library, a computer center, a group dining room, a café, a pub, an activity room, a salon, a movie theater, an exercise room and multiple outdoor courtyards.

Brightview Senior Living operates at least two existing communities in Northern Virginia and four in suburban Maryland, including a new assisted living facility in Bethesda

"The demand for senior housing will soon reach a critical level in the county," Brightview said in the application.

The project is one of several new senior living developments moving forward in the D.C. region, including projects in Fair Lakes, Tysons, Kensington, North Bethesda, Northeast D.C. and Southeast D.C.
