Cybersec Startup Fishing Out Lemons

Placeholder

The DC region continues to build its cybersecurity hub with the addition of LemonFish Technologies. The Reston-based company was launched last year by Nicholas Metzgar, Dr. Lance Forbes and Thom Ottoson, (Nicholas and Thom posed for a car selfie), who had worked on cybersecurity solutions for the government. Its LemonAid product, introduced this week, helps enterprises root out insider threats to intellectual property or workplace violence. Instead of looking at individuals, it looks at events and builds a case using IT records as well as HR and physical security records.

The 10-person company is backed by LLR Partners, a PE firm with over $2B in four funds. The target customers are companies with heavy investment in R&D like pharma, oil and gas, and manufacturers of cutting-edge technology. It’s also well suited for companies that use third parties for services, like Uber, Lyft and Airbnb. Thom says the technology can help customers know who their drivers are or what kind of person is staying in their house. Despite the founders’ government backgrounds, the company will primarily focus on the private sector, says Thom.
