Lawyers Behind GDS Move
Georgetown Day School's $40 million consolidation of its lower, middle, and upper schools into one campus isn't happening by itself. We snapped Arent Fox real estate partner Richard Newman, who headed a five-lawyer team, and associate Ria Williams. They supervised a land purchase from Safeway and Volvo and Volkswagen dealership properties in Tenleytown, on a tight timeline with many moving parts (eg, several tranches of debt, tax-exempt bonds, income tax issues, and multiple derivative transactions).
Richard's also advising DC United on the possible new stadium. (No doubt the ticket to a future US World Cup.) It could go near the Nats' stadium on Buzzard Point. For now, hold your excitement for the final Argentina v. Germany match, because this 20,000-seat stadium, if approved, wouldn't be ready for a match until March 2017.
We snapped this art in the style of the Washington Color School (also known as Color Field) in Richard's office. After years of being a fan, Richard happened to meet the painter and help with some legal work. Richard also had a hand in choosing art for the new office where the firm moved last year, so look around his floor of the 1717 K St building for similar artwork.
