Madeleine Albright!
Yesterday afternoon we headed to the Newseum for the Madeleine Albright Luncheon promoting the advancement of women in politics. We snapped the former Secretary of State surrounded by the moderator, Good Morning America’s Claire Shipman, and by former DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, Tanzanian Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, and USAID’s Susan Markham.
The event, hosted by NDI, the National Democratic Institute, echoed Albright’s famous quote, “there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.” Panelists discussed the importance of promoting women for the global economy: still today, 28 countries do not allow women to obtain credit, and 15 do not allow women to work outside the house without their husband’s permission.
IMF Director Christine Lagarde spoke highly of Aswat Nisaa, a Tunisian organization awarded a grant by NDI for engaging women in the political process. “When women do well,” she said, “the developing world does better.”
