Blithe Spirit!
We were thrilled last night to go to the opening performance of Blithe Spirit at the National Theatre, starring the incomparable Angela Lansbury.
The incredible 89 year old(!) had her DC stage debut in 1957, also at the National, and has since starred here in Mame in ’68 and Sweeney Todd in ’80. She gave a magical performance, rewarded by one of the loudest standing ovations we've ever heard. In the delightful comedy written by Noel Coward, she plays a medium who conjures a man's deceased wife, to the annoyance of his current wife. All seven actors give superb performances, with precision timing making the madcap antics hysterically funny. The show is only here through March 29.
