Cinderella's DC Debut!
Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella opened Wednesday night at National Theatre and we were there among many adults and a handful of young diehard fairy tale fans. The Broadway production followed the typical story line but with some modern twists and humor. Cinderella’s mission was to spread kindness and the prince was also searching for more meaning in life. It had jabs at world leaders, body shaming and political protests. Cinderella didn’t leave one glass slipper behind, but still ended up with the prince.
The stage and costumes were incredible. Cinderella’s costume, by Tony Award-winning designer William Ivey Long, literally transformed from rags to a ball gown before the audience as she spun around. Her fairy godmother goes from a crazy old woman in rags to a dazzling fairy that flies a few times above the stage. The stage magically transforms from a forest to a castle to a ballroom. While Cinderella is often thought of as a children’s story, this Broadway version is equally as appealing to adults.
