How Timber is Changing the Future of Design & Construction Across Asset Classes

Craig is a nationally recognized design leader with a focus on innovative, sustainable integrated design and the incorporation of emerging building technologies including cross-laminated timber (CLT), mass timber and modular construction. He has extensive experience with mass timber projects including development of the Katerra Mass Timber Commercial Office Platform, the Catalyst building (designed to ILFI zero energy and zero carbon certification standards), and student housing for UC Santa Cruz designed in collaboration with Mithun. Craig also serves in a firmwide role, sharing knowledge across the practice and collaborating with teams on a wide range of project typologies for clients looking to explore the integration of new building technologies. Mithun is currently working with Arup Fire, Swinerton TimberLab and Smartlam North America under a US Forest Service Grant to design a series of CLT-based exterior wall tests (NFPA 285 tests) that will contribute new code-compliant assemblies to the mass-timber tool kit available to the public. Such pre-approved assemblies would meet fire- and building-code requirements (NFPA 285) for mid-to-high rise buildings, and would allow more building envelopes to be prefabricated with wood and integrated with the structural systems.

Ann is founder and CEO of Pieper Properties, an award-winning developer of sustainable urban properties. She holds an MS in Real Estate Finance from the University of Wisconsin, and a Bachelor’s in Economics (with a Minor in Art History) from Vanderbilt. Ann serves on the Historic Preservation Commission of the City of Milwaukee, BID NO. 2 (Historic Third Ward), and the Business and Economic Development Committee of the Walker’s Point Association. She has served on the Walker’s Point Association Board and as President of the HEAR Wisconsin Board. Ann has been a 40 Under 40 honoree as well as recognized as a Woman of Influence.

A “unicorn” in the world of construction technology, Lisa offers 15 years of design and construction management experience focused on prefab and modular buildings. Her unique blend of expertise in building codes, structural engineering, acoustic performance, building envelopes, embodied carbon analysis,fire science, permit approvals, cost planning, supply chain, procurement, logistics, scheduling, and sequencing is topped off with a deep personal network in the emerging mass timber and construction innovation field. As one of the leading experts in the US on Mass Timber, she sits on several industry and professional advisory boards and supporting mass timber market development through individual research projects and organizations like the Tallwood Design Institute and the Council of Tall Building and Urban Habitat. As a co-author and peer reviewer for the 2012 United States Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) Handbook, Lisa began her contributions to the market development of CLT and mass timber well before the design and construction industry realized its potential. In 2016 she peer reviewed the Nail Laminated Timber Design and Construction Guide and by 2018 had completed a two phase research program establishing a new design methodology for the blast resistance of CLT, accomplished through seven full scale live blast tests and opening a new market for timber structures.

Monte has over 20 years of design and management experience on projects ranging from small adaptive reuse to international competitions. Through each project Monte focuses on exceeding client expectations, developing aesthetically purposeful designs, community-based interaction, and creating thoughtful building systems through critical thinking of each element. Monte has been a Boston area native throughout his 20 years of architectural engagement; and brings nuanced experience in tackling the challenges of executing projects in urban contexts and navigating the complexities of municipal and civic processes. As part of his engagement in the city and its civic discourse, Monte has been a guest critic at the Boston Architectural College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Northeastern University. He was also a faculty member of the Boston Architectural College for over 7 years. Monte holds a professional Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the Boston Architectural College, served in the United States Navy, and has considerable hands-on construction experience.
