Designing the Post-Pandemic City

Stan Eckstut, EE&K’s senior principal, has a national reputation as an innovator and leader in large-scale architecture extending back over thirty years to his pioneering work designing the master plan for Battery Park City. Stan’s singular understanding of architecture as a practice that creates and sustains the public realm is evident in all his designs, from large-scale waterfront developments and intermodal transportation hubs to campuses, schools, and even prototypes for bus shelters. In each case, his work has strengthened the urban fabric by creating new centers of social and civic activity; as he points out, “even my smallest buildings are about being part of a larger community.” A pragmatic visionary, Stan’s creative exploration of the possibilities of place is tempered by his keen sense of market and political realities. Yolanda is the Senior Principal and owner of Hickok Cole Architects, a large commercial architecture and interiors firm located in Washington, DC. She has over 25 years of base building and interior design experience in a variety of project types from large-scale, mixed-use developments to small commercial interiors, both around the world and in the region. She is widely recognized for her leadership in the region’s business community and for her work on many award-winning projects in the commercial/corporate, government, and institutional markets. Prior to joining Hickok Cole Architects as a partner, Ms. Cole was a partner with Arlington-based LyrixDesign, which merged with Hickok’s firm to become Hickok Cole. LyrixDesign was one of the top 25 woman-owned and interior design firms in the region. She began her career with New York-based Kohn Pederson Fox Associates (KPF), where she was a senior designer of large-scale high-rise office buildings. While with KPF, Ms. Cole served as senior designer for the 1.2-million square-foot Chifley Tower in Sydney, Australia, where she lived for two years; and the award-winning Capital Cities/ABC headquarters in New York.

As FOX Architects’ Design Principal, JP oversees the design direction and vision across all disciplines, including architecture, interiors, and integrated projects. Elevated to the American Institute of Architects’ prestigious College of Fellows, JP’s work has been recognized on a national level for its unique contribution to the profession and society. He has pioneered the sustainable practice of building recycling, a topic on which he has lectured nationally. In over 30 years of professional practice, JP has created more than 13.2 million square feet of corporate build-to-suit, commercial and institutional architecture, his projects having been featured in national and international design publications.

Jill Spaeth is the co-founder of Spaeth Hill, a forward-thinking design-build practice specializing in brand experiences, signage programs and curated moments. Spaeth Hill’s clients include Smithsonian, DynCorp International and World Bank Group. She began her career in commercial real estate, at FOX Architects, focusing on architectural signage and design. In 2010, she founded Citizen Creative, bringing comprehensive sign plan development, wayfinding programs, large-scale interior branding and graphic design services to the D.C. area. In 2014, Jill was the only woman of five nominees selected to sit on the board of AIGA, the largest professional association for design. She oversaw programs and initiatives for the organization’s 30,000 members, with a specific focus on fundraising and scholarship development through the Design Continuum Fund. The fund has become a national program allowing AIGA's 70+ chapters to develop their own scholarship programs locally. Spaeth received an executive education in business at Yale University’s School of Management and has a B.F.A in graphic design from Rochester Institute of Technology. She frequently lectures at the University of Maryland and has taught graphic design history at George Mason University.
